Vogue 1247 - Major Failure on me

I like to get a jump start on spring by sewing after the new year.   So after reading so many glowing reviews of this pattern I decided to try it out.   The top has been made by several fashionable ladies whose sewing I admire, and there are a bazillion reviews of it on PR.    So here is my muslin out of "free fabric" leftover from the dress I made using Louise Cutting's Ebb Blouse pattern.    I bought the small sizes since everyone said this was oversized, cut and sewed size 12 with no alterations to check it out.

I sewed all the french seams, but as others did, tired out and was having a difficult time matching that intersection of the lower points with the center front bodice seam on the horizontal lower front seam, so just sewed a standard seam and serge finished it, pressing it up.   I did the same for the side/sleeve seams.   But the 12 looks sloppy and hangs on me like I'm wearing a RTW XL.    I do not like how the front dips and I'm not sure who they designed those front darts to fit.   Yikes!

I was considering making the next one using an Abraham striped silk charmeuse.  But after seeing this,  that seems to be a waste of a fine fabric.   Not sure what to do with this one - maybe it would be good for a very hot summer day.     The top looks fine on the hanger (hem was a royal pain in the a$$) but on is another story.    Judge for yourself.     Not sure if alterations will save this pattern for me.    I may try out the 17" skirt lengthened several inches.  Who decides to put out a pattern with a 17" skirt?

  1. Wow, you really are a petite thing! Yes, that is huge on you and doesn't flatter your cute shape. It happens.

  2. Oh dear. So not working for you, Terri! Not just too large but perhaps the fabric is a little too crisp.

Isn't it frustrating when you see someone look great in a garment but it turns out that it just isn't for you? Ask me how I know this!

  3. Thanks for posting this, Terri. I totally agree with you and shams. I'll have to go have a look at the ones on PR. This top is more than huge. Or maybe less. So smart to make a muslin.

  4. You look microscopic in that! Funny how some articles of clothing just don't flatter, no matter what. At least you didn't cut into your good fabric.

  5. don't feel bad - Vogue 1247 looked terrible on me, too.

However, I made one for a friend with a very different body shape from mine & it looked good on her.

  6. That's a huge difference from hanger to body. Sorry it didn't work out for you! I like

  7. Ack, cut myself off, haha! I like the lines of the top, I bought it for the top (not that teeny short skirt!) So I'm stubbornly hopeful I can make it work? Maybe I'll try a silk batiste?

  8. Such a pity it is swimming on you like this, as the stripes in the fabric are very effective on the top. So, you have ticked the wadder off your list for 2013 - only leaves room for perfect fit garments for the rest of the year!

  9. Yeh, that is just way too big for your tiny self. It's big everywhere. But the sewing was super!

  10. I guess some projects just aren't meant to be. Interesting how good this top looks on some, and others.....not so much....

That said, YOU are looking so healthy and happy and glowing! Great to see :)

  11. Yes, it looks waay too big - but a perfect job of sewing. I made the top when it first came out and wasn't satisfied with it either. The sewing inst. in Bldr said it was a 'sleeper' pattern and was going to tell me 'what' needed to be done but we got busy talking about other things. I'm going to email her in a bit for further clarification. Glad your feeling well enough to do your blog - I've missed you and the blog. You always inspire me.

  12. Haven't check in lately, but now I'm caught up on your posts. Glad the boys are situated in their separate apts. I have two dogs that occasionally want to draw blood. I am able to separate them (now), and then they whine because they miss one another. Only have had one vet visit as a result of a fight which has been a few years ago now. If they start picking at one another, I separate them for a while. Kids! lol

It's good to hear your health is improved enough to back off the meds. Hope all that goes well!
